What Is ISPI? Founded in 1962, the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) is the leading international association dedicated to improving productivity and performance in the workplace. ISPI represents performance improvement professionals throughout the United States, Canada, and 40 other countries. ISPI's mission is to develop and recognize the proficiency of our members and advocate the use of Human Performance Technology. Assembling an Annual Conference & Expo and other educational events like the Institute, publishing books and periodicals, and supporting research are some of the ways ISPI works toward achieving this mission. The Past is Prologue With roots firmly planted in performance research and instructional design, the Society was founded in 1962 as the National Society for Programmed Instruction. Later, evolving with members who were concerned fundamentally with performance and its improvement, the Society changed its name to the National Society for Performance and Instruction. As the Society's mission developed more globally and human performance technology became more widely regarded as a process of selection, analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of programs to most cost-effectively influence human behavior and accomplishment, we became the International Society for Performance Improvement. A Focus on Performance and the ISPI Advantage Workforce performance takes on new significance in our economic future. Human performance technology (HPT) -- the systematic approach to improving productivity and competence -- is the key to global competitiveness. Although training and education are critical to increasing competitiveness, meeting the educational challenge is only part of the answer. An effective human resource system needs an outstanding learning system, but it requires more; it requires a focus on performance. To improve human performance, we must manage the performance improvement system. That system must be the core of an organization's human resource efforts if it is to maintain its competitiveness in the long run. Who Belongs to ISPI? Performance technologists, training directors, human resources managers, instructional technologists, human factors practitioners, project managers, and organizational consultants are members of ISPI. They work in a variety of settings including business, academia, government, health services, banking, and the armed forces.
Please review this page and the ISPI web site to learn about the many programs and events available to ISPI members. What Is HPT? Human Performance Technology (HPT), a systematic approach to improving productivity and competence, uses a set of methods and procedures -- and a strategy for solving problems -- for realizing opportunities related to the performance of people. More specific, it is a process of selection, analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of programs to most cost-effectively influence human behavior and accomplishment. It is a systematic combination of three fundamental processes: performance analysis, cause analysis, and intervention selection, and can be applied to individuals, small groups, and large organizations. How Does HPT Work? Human performance technology is a set of methods and procedures, and a strategy for solving problems, for realizing opportunities related to the performance of people. It can be applied to individuals, small groups, and large organizations. It is, in reality, a systematic combination of three fundamental processes: performance analysis, cause analysis, and intervention selection. Our Vision ISPI's vision is that members have the proficiency and insight to customize Human Performance Technology to meet the needs and goals of their organizations and clients, so that the members are recognized as valued assets. Our Mission ISPI's mission is to develop and recognize the proficiency of its members and advocate the use of Human Performance Technology. |

The Benefits The benefits of membership are both tangible, such as a year-long subscription to our acclaimed journal, Performance Improvement, as well as intangible, such as the educational networks that develop among members. In addition, ISPI members receive discounts on many of the offerings summarized below. Insurance Services ISPI is able to offer group insurance programs at group rates as a membership benefit because of its alliance with the Trust for Insuring Educators (TIE) administered through Forest T. Jones. You can get complete information on the programs on the following web sites.
ISPI through TIE also offers a program on car insurance with GEICO. TIE was established more than 25 years ago in cooperation with three educational associations. Individually, these associations lacked large numbers of members and, consequently, buying power. TIE made it possible for member organizations to pool their memberships and create a large enough base to secure competitive insurance plans and rates. Today, more than 59 educational associations including ISPI comprise TIE. Association members enjoy the benefits of mass purchasing power, excellent product selection and superior customer service. Periodicals Performance Improvement (PI). Published 10 times a year, the acclaimed journal is geared toward practitioners of performance technology in the workplace. This free member benefit strives to provide specific guidelines on applications of performance technology to help its readers expand and understand their scope of HPT. PI deals with all types of interventions and all phases of the HPT process. Its content includes "how to" articles, procedural models, ready-to-use job aides, guidelines for research, updates on trends, reviews, and field viewpoints. View executive summaries of recently published articles. Complimentary to ISPI members. Performance Improvement Quarterly (PIQ). A peer-reviewed journal created to stimulate professional discussion in the field and to advance the discipline of HPT through publishing scholarly works. Published four times a year, PIQ emphasizes original work involving technologies such as front-end analysis, development, and evaluation, as well as myriad interventions. Substantially discounted to members. PerformanceXpress. Published online 12 times a year, PerformanceXpress is the primary forum for timely communication to the membership. Included in the newsletter are reports on ISPI and chapter activities, employment opportunities, calendar items, Board information, and official announcements. Complimentary to members.
