Session Description

Over the past decades, we learning-and-performance professionals have tried our best to hide our learning evaluations in the dark corners of the basement. Once or twice a year, we shine a light, dust off our smile sheets, hang them in the sun to dry, and then drag them down the stairs again to fester in the dank darkness. Research with professionals like us shows even we are dissatisfied with our own learning evaluations! Then, every few years, some new technology is offered, learning analytics, dashboards, big data, etc.—and yet, when examined closely, these shiny objects leave us disappointed. Where is fundamental innovation in learning evaluation?

Will Thalheimer, noted research-to-practice pioneer, is quietly leading the way. In this session, Will will share two learning-evaluation innovations, (1) his distinctive-questioning technique outlined in his award-winning book: Performance-Focused Learners Surveys, and (2) LTEM (the Learning-Transfer Evaluation Model), which is replacing the Kirkpatrick-Katzell Four-Level Model in many organizations. As learning-and-performance professionals we now have opportunities to create virtuous cycles of continuous improvement—through the evaluation tools we use.
